WSU Panel: The War in Ukraine on Apr. 11

Join a virtual panel of WSU Vancouver scholars from the School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs and the Department of History as they present their research and analysis of the conflict in Ukraine. 

Speakers and topics:

  • Anthony C. Lopez, Ph.D., “Grievance, Opportunism and Miscalculation in Ukraine” The tragic combination of grievance and opportunism that led Putin to invade Ukraine, the strategic calculus that led Putin to believe the invasion would yield both short- and long-term victories and prospects for escalation and bargaining on the near horizon.
  • Karl Krotke-Crandall, Ph.D., “The Language of War: Demystifying Putin’s ‘De-Nazification’ of Ukraine through the Soviet-Historical Lens” The history behind the language of Putin and his supporters, the de-Nazification issue and the use of the Russian Orthodox Church as an extension of Putin’s regime.
  • Carolyn Long, Ph.D., “Putin’s War: A View from the Balkans” The European reaction to the conflict with an emphasis on the Balkans, a region that has historically been a site of conflict from which some countries are still recovering.
  • Paul Thiers, Ph.D., “Geopolitical, Economic and Energy Security Impacts of the Conflict” The economic and political impact of the sanctions, the role of global energy supply and the position of China as a potential Russian ally.
This program is a partnership between Fort Vancouver Regional Libraries and WSU Vancouver’s Public Affairs program.
