Being physically active is one of the best things you can do for your health. If you’re exercising outside during these darker, cooler winter months, be sure to take steps to stay safe.
Here are some tips for exercising in the winter:
• Watch for icy sidewalks and be aware of slippery surfaces, such as the paint of crosswalks.
• Wear a reflective vest and headlamp to ensure other people and motorists can see you when it’s dark. Make sure bicycles have headlights and taillights.
• Stay hydrated. You can still become dehydrated in the cold weather.
• Dress in layers. Remove layers as you start to sweat and put them back on as you cool down.
• Avoid cotton. It stays wet next to your skin. Instead, have your first layer be a synthetic material that draws moisture away from your body.
• Protect your head, hands, feet and ears. Extremities get colder faster as the body directs blood flow to your body’s core.
