The Vancouver City Council extended its ban on fossil fuels after more than 30 people lobbied the governing body during a public meeting in December.

The lobbying effort, mostly students, wanted the council to at least extend a six-month ban on using bulk fossil fuel facilities as part of an effort to fight against climate change.

“It’s vital that we extend the fossil fuels moratorium, or even better yet make it permanent,” Skyview High School student Phoebe Abbruzzese said at the December meeting, the Clark County Today reported. “Not only does this industry harm our environment, but economically is becoming weaker. Although it’s not feasible to make an immediate switch to renewable energy, we need to start taking steps away from fossil fuels.”

The council unanimously approved the six-month ban, which gives it more time to create a more long-lasting plan.

“A six-month extension will illustrate Vancouver’s green ideals. The future of our city, our state and our country are at stake here,” high schooler Jonah Kropp said, the Clark County Today reported. “Change starts at the local level.”
