A homeless shelter will open through a partnership with the Vancouver Housing Authority (VHA), the city of Vancouver and Clark County Community Services, with each household getting a room and restroom facilities, considered critical during the pandemic.
“Emergency shelter plays an important role in the homeless crisis response system by breaking the cycle of homelessness,” Vanessa Gaston, Clark County Community Services director, said, ClarkCountyToday.com reported.
The partners hope to open the shelter in late February or early March, the publication reported. Clark County Community Services will oversee a contract with a non-profit service provider that will handle day-to-day operations. Applications to serve as the operator are accepted until Jan. 1, ClarkCountyToday.com reported on Dec. 8. The three partners will fund the acquisition of a site, which the VHA will find.
Local, state and federal sources will fund shelter operations, the publication reported. The state will pay for new shelter beds. Federal Emergency Solutions Grant shelter funds and local Mental Health funds are also anticipated.
When shelter operations’ funds run out in two to three years, the site will be converted to affordable housing by the VHA.
