CITY OF BATTLE GROUND: Parks & Community Engagement Advisory Board Inspires Community Connections

Meeting

City of Battle Ground issued the following announcement.

Parks, gathering places, and community events are considerably import to well-being and quality of life.  This point of view was clearly expressed by Battle Ground community members in a 2018 survey.

The community’s feedback led the city to form the Parks and Community Engagement Advisory Board, a citizen-led group whose role is to evaluate and help develop parks, recreational programming, and community events.

The 7-member volunteer board has been working together for a little over a year now.  They are:

  • Josie Calderon, Board Chair
  • Jennifer Rosenberger
  • Michelle Yenderrozos
  • Jen Hamilton
  • Glen Erickson
  • Toni Wise
  • Tyrel Halme, Youth Representative
You may recognize them as neighbors or long-time members of the community. You may also recognize them for the impact they have made on community events such as last year’s Halloween and Holiday Tree Lighting events.  Their innovative ideas and guidance have enhanced Battle Ground’s traditional events and have added new opportunities for engagement.

With COVID-19 restrictions, the board sees an increased importance of building connection and engagement within the community.  This year’s annual Park Appreciation Day volunteer work party was modified to become Yard Appreciation Day where neighbors and community members connected by sharing favorite yard tips, ideas and photos on social media.

As Summer becomes Fall and the community continues to navigate unexpected changes, the board continues to look for new ways to build community connections and engagement. They recently turned their focus to the upcoming holiday season and plans for Battle Ground’s long-established Halloween Fright Night and Holiday Tree Lighting events.

“Celebrating tradition and connecting as a community is more important than ever,” said board chair Josie Calderon, “Our annual Halloween Fright Night and Holiday Tree Lighting events may look a bit different this year, but we will celebrate as a community – that’s what Battle Ground does.”
