County officials have asked Gov. Jay Inslee to protect schools from COVID-19 liability when schools start back, Clark County Today reported.

The county officials are among a larger number throughout the state seeking protection.

The officials wrote in a July letter that school districts and public schools are working to develop the best ways to protect communities and students, but it will be a challenge once school returns in September.

"We did step up, from becoming overnight daycare centers so healthcare workers and first responders could go to work and save lives, to finding creative ways to feed hungry families throughout our school districts," the letter states, Clark County Today reported. "At the same time, we were developing online learning systems and working to improve equity and access gaps."

The officials said if Inslee wants them to provide the same opportunity for a quality education for students, they need the governor's help.

They urge Inslee to sign an emergency order to protect school systems from liability from the coronavirus once schools reopen.
