The Vancouver City Council recently took a public stance on the issues of racial equality and justice by issuing a statement on the subject.

The council’s statement said that the council members, “have listened and learned in our listening sessions,” which has given them better appreciation of what systemic racism is and how it affects the community, according to the Statement Regarding Racial Equity and Racial Justice

“As a result, we will increase our commitment to taking pro-active steps to address its many manifestations in our community,” the statement reads.

Some of the more specific areas where the council said it intends to address “public health and prosperity inequities,” include high unemployment rates, food insecurity, housing for both renters and those who are seeking home ownership, education, chronic health problems occurring in higher numbers among portions of the population and limitation on access to health care," according to the statement.

“We will continue to build an equitable and inclusive culture and fight racism throughout our community,” the statement reads.
