Improperly disposed waste negatively affects the community and environment; it pollutes our water, harms wildlife and threatens public health. Clark County Public Health’s Solid Waste Enforcement program (SWE) works to protect the community and the environment by responding to citizen nuisance complaints regarding improperly stored garbage and permitting and inspecting solid waste handling facilities throughout Clark County.
To promote proper solid waste management, program staff consult with property owners, businesses, tenants and collaborate with a wide array of agency partners. Recycling facilities, compost facilities, transfer stations and permitted landfills are inspected to make sure they are following state and local regulations. Technical assistance and professional guidance are also provided to support education and outreach efforts, obtain compliance and when a new solid waste facility is proposed within our community. The SWE program protects our community, our environment and our natural resources so we can have a healthy and clean place to live.
Unfortunately, nearly everything we do leaves behind some kind of solid waste such as our household garbage, yard debris, and demolition and construction debris. As good neighbors, we can all do our part to reduce the amount of solid waste we generate (by implementing eco-friendly shopping habits, repair, reuse, buying and using less etc.), composting yard debris and food scraps, recycling and ensuring that any waste we generate is properly and safely disposed.
