City of Vancouver issued the following announcement on Mar. 1.
City of Vancouver launched a nationwide recruitment process to hire Vancouver’s next police chief.
“Like many communities, policing in Vancouver is experiencing change. This, along with changes in local crime rates, state level reforms, and the national dialogue around policing, provides us with an opportunity to continue our support of inclusive and innovative police leadership,” City Manager Eric Holmes said. “This is a critical role for our community and the City organization; I am committed to a full, open and transparent national search for Vancouver’s next police leader.”
To understand the community’s needs and expectations for its next police chief, the City has developed a survey to gather information regarding the attributes and leadership qualities the community values.
The feedback will be used to help identify a pool of candidates that reflect the needs of the community. The anonymous survey is located on Be Heard Vancouver and is open through April 15. If online access is not available, community members are encouraged to contact the City at 360-487-8712 to receive a paper copy by mail.
The City has contracted with Bob Murray and Associates to help manage the national recruitment and hiring process, with the goal of an appointment in June. Find the latest information about the recruitment process, including the position description, at www.cityofvancouver.us/chief-recruitment.
The City is seeking a new chief due to the recent retirement announcement from Chief James McElvain. Chief McElvain is working with the City to ensure a smooth transition before his Jun. 30 retirement date.
